Food is fuel. I know that there are cultural and social associations with food that make eating a celebratory and loving experience, but at its most basic level, you eat to live.

Like a car, your body provides you with functional benefits. How you take care if it determines how well it is going to work. If you put the wrong fuel into your car, it will still get you around, but not that well. If you continue to neglect oil changes, lube jobs, ignore fluid levels, air tire pressure, tune ups, the brakes – it will eventually give out, or suddenly stop working.

“Your body is the most important vehicle you will ever have”, writes Teri Gentes, in an article she wrote entitled Common Sense Nutrition. She speaks to the importance of taking time out of your busy schedule to take care of yourself, precisely so you can be healthy enough to take care of all your other responsibilities. “If you really are indispensable, with endless tasks that stand between you and caring for yourself, you need a reminder that taking care of yourself, the hot commodity that you are, is extremely important and worthy of prioritized attention”.

We humans are tough when we are properly fueled. But if you have spiking sugar levels, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, then you won’t function well and are susceptible to various lifestyle diseases that are preventable or manageable through proper nutrition. You can exercise your brains out, but if you are not eating well, your training program will be far less effective.

Take the time to plan for daily eating, just like you plan your work day and personal errands. Proper fueling means energy, for you and your family. I’d say that’s as important as anything on my to do list!
